6/19 – Sailing the San Juans

Adventure on the high seas

This weekend brought a special treat as we headed up to visit Jack and Heidi (and the poodles) on San Juan Island. Jack arranged for us to join a friend for a day of sailing around the islands. The weather was absolutely perfect and we caught nice winds to really get going. As a land-lubber, I loved being the sailor for a day, particularly with someone as experienced as Jack to run the ship and educate the novices. Amy was an old pro having spent many days with her dad out on the water.

We made our way to Deer Island dodging ferries and enjoying amazing views along the way. We docked for lunch and then made our way home tacking back and forth through the winds and currents. What did I learn? A) There is a lot to sailing and it takes years to really become proficient. B) The way to do it is to have a father-in-law like Jack who can make you feel like king of the seas for a random Saturday.
